Our trip to Maui was amazing.  I feel like we experienced as much as we possibly could in a week there.  We stayed with my friend from high school who has lived there for several years.  She took us everywhere.  The pineapples were delicious, we both ate them until our mouths were sore.  The sunrises and sunsets were amazing.  The ocean and beaches are self explanatory.  The sand was great.  We were in Maui during the time when the whales are close to the island keeping there babies in the warm water and allowing them to grow before going deeper into the ocean.  I could not believe how close the whales were to the shore.  It seemed like you couldn't look at the ocean for more than ten seconds without seeing a whale splashing around.  The whale sightseeing tour ended with snorkeling and lunch. I cant describe every tree and plant on the island but it seemed like you couldn't look at them for less than a few minutes.  We will definitely go to Maui again.  It was one of our most enjoyable trips. We try not to visit the same place twice if we can go somewhere new but the next time we go to Hawaii its going to be almost impossible not to go to Maui over the other islands even though we have never been to the others. My wife and I are able to travel so much because my mother in law works for an airline and  we can fly standby.  Sometimes you can get stuck doing this.  During our trip a flight was canceled going from Maui going to the mainland.  Because all of the people on the canceled flight were pushed to other flights we were stuck in Maui, but I cant think of a better place to be stuck for a few days.  After staying two days longer than planned we really need to get home for work and to get our daughter from Grandpa and grandma.  We checked the open seats and number of standbys on the flight and we were in trouble again.  We checked the nearby islands to see if there was a flight that looked open.  We saw that Kona island had an open flight so we took a chance and booked a flight on an eight seat island hopper from Maui to Kona. That was also our first time in a small plane and was an experience in itself, hitting the air pockets and the plane dropping for a second really make you nervous.  It was really fun and I hope that I can ride in a small plane again sometime. Little did we know that a lot of the other standbys trying to get out of Maui had the same island hopping idea to catch the other flight.  Now we were really going to be in trouble.  Do we buy a one way ticket and spend a grand for a flight we could have got on for free or just wait it out and get stuck on a different island for another day?  We waited it out and luckily we were able to get on the last two seats on the plane. Getting home was very nerve racking but just made the whole Maui trip that much more memorable.
