Another trip on the Amtrak through beautiful scenery (wide blue lakes, rising green mountains, TREES, deer etc.) brought us to Essex Junction. Having learnt our lesson about walking with suitcases the day before and seeing as it had become dark much earlier this far North, we jumped in a taxi. The driver was a bit of a looney tune, in fact every taxi driver in America seems somewhat unhinged! Anyway, we make it to the B&B and no one is in. Creepy. Then a car pulls up (remember it is dark). Creepy x2. It turns out the lovely lady Lynn, who runs the B&B (well, just a few rooms in her house, really) had been down to the train station to pick us up!

Since it was still early (9pm) she dropped us at the bar in town which had a band playing and a big deck with tables and chairs outside. We were ID'd, which surprised me as the night before in Burlington, the waitress said "you're 21 right?" and that was all. This guy however, seemed very concerned that an underage English couple were prowling the streets of little towns in Vermont. I nearly asked him if he was joking, when he started to suggest we go back and get our passports! We stayed good humoured though and after checking with his boss, he let us in. Odd!

The following morning we awoke to a big Vermont breakfast of grapefruit then eggs, bacon, asparagus, mushrooms, English muffins and lastly blueberry muffins. All helped down with lashings of OJ and coffee. An excellent start to our big day: crossing the border to Canada!
