Where I stayed
So after travelling quite a distance by train overnight, we arrived into Roma Termini Stazione around 11am. As soon as we got off the train we noticed quite the jump in temperature! Perhaps we have left the rain of London & Paris behind us. Found a map and then figured out which direction to head to our hotel – walked a couple blocks with bags in the crazy traffic and the Starhotel was found! What a great hotel – we got to check in early so able to shower and lax for a bit before hitting the city.
We were able to get some tickets for an open air bus tour and found its stop near the train station again. Although we had to wait for a bit for the bus, it finally got there and we hopped on. We stayed on for most of the loop, seeing a lot of the great sights like the Coliseum, Roman Forum, Piazza Venezia (aka the wedding cake), the Vatican, and of course many more very old and very important buildings and monuments along the way! It was getting quite warm on the top deck of the bus so we hopped off to find the Trevi fountain. Near the fountain we were able to find a great lil' pizzeria and enjoy those first tastes of Italy – delizioso! Afterwards we went back to the Trevi fountain, and of course threw some coins in and made our wishes ;) We then walked to the nearby Spanish steps to take some more photos and people watch (there were a few about!). Once we got the pics we wanted, we hopped back onto the bus and made it back to the hotel. Cam and I went in search of a local bottle shop to find some drinks (a great find – they even opened the bottle of wine for us!) and then took them back to the hotel for some afternoon liquids.
That evening we let Jude & Dave rest up at the hotel, and they found some good kai nearby. Cam and I ventured back into the town towards the Coliseum, although we were too late to enter the Roman Forum or the Coliseum. Alas, we went for a long wander around both sites and were able to see quite a bit from the outside, and of course it is still very cool & awe-inspiring to walk amongst these places of such history, knowing what had walked there before us. We then found a great café just across the street from the Coliseum and enjoyed an amazing tea of caprese salad, cannelloni (the best I’ve ever tasted), pizza and chianti as the sun set. We then walked back towards the hotel, which a quick stop for gelato of course, and called it a night.
