Route: From Astoria, OR to Bainbridge Island, Washington (WA)
Kilometres: 294

It's always great to have a coffee shop attached to the hotel, and the one this morning had some good beans to wake up to. We checked out and drove over the historic Astoria bridge, into the Evergreen state of Washington (aka, almost home state!). It was really nice drive along the waterfronts and through the forests, as we made our way diagonally through the state. We were headed for Bainbridge Island, which is across the water from downtown Seattle. My sister and Brian were up in Seattle for the weekend, so we arranged to have my Mum and (brother) Daniel come down from Vancouver and meet us there – we decided to stay on Bainbridge Island, which is only a 35min ferry away from downtown (and a cheaper place to stay!). We made it to the hotel, parked the car, walked about 1km to the ferry, and after a really nice crossing (with brilliant views of the mountains, harbour, and downtown Seattle), we met up with my family at the Ferry Pier on the other side.

We wandered back along the waterfront and made our way to Pike Place Market – we had all been here before (yes, even Cam), though it’s always a great market to wander around and look for some good eats! We hadn’t had lunch yet so found some yum snacks along the way to keep us going until dinner. It was a surprisingly hot day in Seattle too (much to Brian’s dismay seeking the cool, wet northwest weather), so it wasn’t a surprise we took the wandering slowly, and actually went to have dinner early to seek some shade. We went to the Steelhead Diner, which had amazingly yum appys like deep-fried cheese curds (yes, you read that right) and fantastic mains. It was great to spend a couple hours with the family, and catch up on adventures. We then caught the sunset ferry back to Bainbridge Island, soaking in more amazing views of the surrounding mountains and rising moon.
