Our friends James and Colleen moved to Anchorage, Alaska a few years ago, and we thought we would take this time to make a visit.  Might as well add it on, right?

We took our few days there as a chance to re-charge and relax before tackling everything waiting for us in Calgary - moving, job hunting, re-integrating into the grind!

Our flight from Frankfurt stopped over in Whitehorse, Canada for a few hours.  We knew we were back in Canada when the airport officials apologized for the poor weather.  Oh, Canada!  How polite you are.

Anchorage was unseasonably warm, which was fantastic - warm, sunny skies for 20 hours a day.  It's hard to go to sleep at 11:00pm when the sun is still up.

Highlights:
- hiking up Flat top and seeing the 360 view at the top
- driving along the coast to Potter's Marsh, Bird Point, and Beluga Point.
- Glacier hike.  We put screws in our shoes for some added grip, and walked along a huge glacier.  To see the expanse of ice, and then be on top of that expanse, was a lifetime experience.
- Seeing the Sarah Palin paraphernalia - they really love her here

We enjoyed hanging out with old friends and exchanging travel stories (James and Colleen were in Southeast Asia last year as well) while drinking wine and feasting on excellent Alaska fish that James caught.  Cooking our own food after a year of eating in restaurants was an added benefit.  :)
