We took a night train from Thesaloniki, Greece, to Sofia.  We usually sleep well on these night excursions (I guess practice makes perfect), but did not fare so well on this train ride.  I guess going through passport formalities in the middle of the night doesn't make for great sleep.

So two weary travelers ended up in Sofia early in the morning.  We took the tram to our hotel, and really noticed the Soviet-era architecture of the underground, convoluted tram entrance ways.  Once we made it to our hotel, we got some bad news - they hadn't kept our reservation and were full.  Not convenient, but considering it was 8:30 in the morning, neither of us thought it would be very hard to find another room.  Wrong.  For some reason, every place we walked to was full!  After going to three hotels, we finally got lucky.  A room was available, but not until the afternoon.  Sigh.

"Explored" the city in our dazed state, and admired the new Sofia (bars, restaurants, fancy hotels) alongside the Soviet-era statues in parks, and of course the old churches.

We left Sofia the next day, and in a funny turn of events, went through the whole day not realizing it was daylight savings time and we should have been an hour ahead.  Luckily, we still made our train that night though.  But barely!!
