We encountered a pretty funny sign at the Athens bus station on our way to Delphi - free smoking. I decided that meant you could practically "smoke for free" by just going into the waiting room.
Delphi, the home of the famous Oracle, is a sleepy little mountain town based on tourism and was very much like Banff. But this time of year it was very quiet, in between the skiing season and the summer tourist season no one was there.
It was a gorgeous warm day with a brilliant blue sky, and the Delphi Oracle was one of the most beautiful ruins we have seen yet. It reminded me a lot of Machu Picchu because it is the setting which makes the ruins so spectacular. The museum was excellent, and to see the Apollo statue made of gold and ivory, all the items found in the treasury, and the huge sculptures still in tact from the temple and surrounding ruins was amazing. The wildflowers all along the hills are reason enough to visit the site in the spring.
It was also our first year anniversary, and I am not sure we could have picked a nicer location to celebrate.
