Where I stayed
Trotamundos Hostel Mendoza
Last night we had an asado at the hostel where they made matambre. I'd never seen it before but it's kind of like mozzaralle pizza except instead of a pizza base there is steak - so it's really just a slice of steak cooked on the parrilla (BBQ) with mozzarella cheese and a slice of tomato on top. I'd actually eaten some dinner earlier cos I didn't want to wait until 1030 and I was really glad because it ended up being a typically Argentinian 1030pm so everyone was just getting tucked in as it turned midnight!!
I've been surprised at how relatively low-key all the Christmas preparations have been here. There are only a few houses that have decorations you can see from outside, there aren't many that the government have put up in the streets and the shops are nowhere near as crazy. Most people seem to be focusing on it as a time to spend with family rather than the commercial aspect which is quite nice for a change. When I was out today there were hardly any people about, although there were a few families having a day out in the park.
I think that the fact it doesn't really feel like Christmas has been helpful in not making me feel too homesick though which is definitely a good thing! Tomorrow all the English football is on so it'll almost be like Boxing Day at home!!!
