Today Dan and I woke up early to catch a bus to Cameron Highlands. We got to the bus station with plenty of time to catch an 8:30 bus. The bus ride was fire and pretty uneventful until we got closer to our destination. Then, though the scenery was breathtaking, the ride got a little curvy. The woman sitting behind us threw up into a plastic bag. Even I felt a little nauseous and I never get motion sick. At least we made it there safe and sound.
We got into Cameron Highlands at around 12:30 and made our way to a hostel we had found on the way to the Cameronian Inn. It's fine, but definitely nothing special.
After putting our stuff down we made our way to lunch at a southern Indian restaurant. Dan got to experience a banana leaf meal for the first time. It was fun.
After lunch we talked to a tour company about things to do tomorrow. We want to catch the 5:30 bus to Penang, so we want a 1/2 day tour. We found one that looks exciting. It's a tour of an orang asli village, a visit to a waterfall and then a view of a Rafaelia flower. It's the largest blooming flower in the world. So we'll do that at 8:45 tomorrow morning.
In the meantime, we heard that the tea plantation closed at 4:30 and it was around 2 p.m. at this point. So instead of catching the local bus we grabbed a taxi and headed up. I am so glad we came! The view is absolutely gorgeous. Rolling hills covered in the green tea bushes as far as the eye can see. We saw the tea factory actually making real tea. That was pretty neat. And then we just walked around for a bit.
After the tea factory we planned to have tea and scones at a local hotel, but it turned out to be kind of pricey so we walked back into town and found a different place to have it The scones were delicious with a little bit of home-made cream. Yum!
Then we came back to the hostel to hang out and read for a bit. We played a game of Scrabble and Dan won. Then we went out for a late dinner at one of the local chinese restaurants. All in all, a great first day of real travel with Dan.
