So the other day I went to visit my new school for the first time. I don't officially start teaching there until next week, but I went to visit and introduce myself to a few of the teachers and students in the building. (Yes, the students are still in attendance during their "summer break." In fact, students are in attendance year round here. They are only completely out of school about 10-15 days a year- on national holidays. The breaks they get in between trimesters still require them to come to the school building every day; they just do not have to attend classes. Instead, they spend their days in school in club sports and activities.)

I have two pairs of "indoor shoes" for school- a black pair and a brown pair. Both pairs have heels- nothing too crazy since I am going to be teaching in them. But they are elevated nonetheless.

So I get to the school building and I change into my shoes and look for the Teachers' Room- there is no "Main Office." I go inside and find the Head English Teacher seated at his desk, with whom I will be coteaching. I introduce myself and he offers me the seat next to him. We begin conversing and he introduces me to some of the other teachers in the room as well. He seemed very nice and I was excited to be working with a teacher whose English was really quite impressive.

He then offers to take me on a tour of the building. We get up from our seats, and yes, the man came up to my shoulders! Now I am by no means a tall woman in the west- I stand under 5'6''. But slap some heels on me and ship me off to Asia... and I mutate into some giant!

As we walked through the building, I passed several of the junior high school students and the reaction was generally the same. Staring, giggles, shyness... The Head English Teacher had each of them introduce themselves to me in English, and I couldn't get over how shy they were to do it! Groups of friends would be pushing and nudging each other to go first. And as I would walk away, they'd be whispering and giggling to each other, who knows about what... but it just may be my mammoth proportions!

It's true everywhere I go- on the train, walking down the streets- I have got a good few inches on almost everyone- men and women alike. But you know a western woman has to feel somewhat safer in an environment where she is twice the size of the average man haha.

Regardless, I think I am going to look into getting some flat shoes for the school year instead.
