Today is Independence Day and this morning we went to Alcatraz for the early morning tour.  The tour starts t Pier 33 where we board our 8 minute ferry ride to Alcatraz.  Once we dock we had to attend a quick orientation of the island and the rules.  As this was a National Park the children could do their Junior Ranges Activities Booklet.  We headed up to the Audio  Tour of the Cell House.  You had your own headsets and could go at your own pace, pausing the audio if you like.  Once the audio tour finished the children had to fill in their booklets, asking questions like what the cells contained and what it would of been like to be in one.  We where on the island for about 3 hours.

When we docked at Pier 33 we walked up to Pier 39 to where our boat was going to leave tonight for the Fireworks.  We had lunch here the famous Clam Chowder in a Sourdough Bead Bowl from Boudin.  Yum Yum, this is a typical meal for the locals.  We decided to go on the open top sight seeing bus we bought a ticket for 3 days.  We boarded the bus and did the full loop which was an hour and half and marked off where we would like to get off tomorrow.  Our last stop was 1 block away from our motel, which was good as we didn't have to walk too far.  We had an hour to relax and get ready before we headed out again.  We decided we needed many more layers of clothing  for tonight as it was quite cold.  Lucy & Carl bought a souvenir polar fleece sweater.  We boarded our Blue & Gold Boat and cruised the Bay for an hour before the fireworks went off.  They were quite spectacular.
