Our first overnight trip in the van saw us drive north to Callander last Friday after work, for a one night stay at The Gart campsite. We then met up with a group of mates from Uni who were heading up to Loch Voil to camp on Saturday night. And overall, I'd say our first wee expedition in the T-Unit was a successful one...

We arrived at The Gart after a hurried reservation and some frantic packing was taken care of after work on Friday. Our '92 Talbot Express looked a bit dated amongst some of the deluxe efforts on show at "The UK's Best Campsite 2003" - a serious place, for serious people who are serious about camping. But nice nevertheless. We got set up with relatively little trouble, and made dinner. Then, being the only ones in the place not to have a widescreen tv in our van, had an early night in our surprisingly large and comfy bed.

On Saturday we packed up (emptying the chemical toilet was a riot) and left the luxurious but reserved surroundings of The Gart and met up with some friends for something a bit more adventurous. Our chosen site ticked all the boxes: remote, shore location, flat space for tents, great views and a place nearby for us to sleep in the van. Beers cooling in the loch, sun shining, fire crackling: I was as happy as a pig in the preverbial.

The weekend's only downer came when we woke up to see one of our group, Verenah, being carted off in the back of an ambulance with a broken leg. As far as downers go, that ranks pretty high, so we packe dup and set off pretty soon afterwords. A quick pub lunch back in Callander and we headed for home, stopping only for the odd torrential rain shower. A neccessity if your wipers dont work....
