Breakfast again at the comfort in and then checkout about $160 US for two nights including Breakfast we enjoyed our stay.
We then set off in search of the pentagon but with no address only knowing it was behind the cemetery. Our GPS does not having any points of interest installed so all we could do was drive vaguely in that direction and hope for the best well of course we got lost but by chance came around the back of the pentagon. We weren’t about to risk ending up in Richmond so we set the GPS for Ocean City, Maryland and headed off to pick up our new van.
This was by freeway most of the way and only once took the wrong exit which took us into a rather poor part of town but gave us a chance to see a different side of the place
We eventually rejoined the freeway for the 150 mile drive to the seaside resort of ocean city
We had to cross over Chesapeake Bay via a huge bridge that I think is 5 miles over water and as high if not higher than our gateway.
somewhere along this route we stopped for Lunch at Handee’s Broiled Burgers we entered and the lady that served us I think was dressing up for Halloween earlier either that or she had forgot to put the full set of teeth in as all I could see was one tooth. I shouldn’t go on looks though as she was quite polite and interested in where we had come from and wanted to talk to us more before being called away. We ordered our lunch of broiled beef burgers which turned out to be surprisingly tasty when compared to the McDonalds equivalent but we found out what the meaning of upsizing was with the large drink more than enough for Cath and I both.
One more stop at a antique/outdoor roadside shop with a gaggle of Adirondack ( Cath’s favourite ) chairs out front all in different colours , on closer inspection these were made of plastic so would not rot but lacked the authenticity of the ones she has got at home. Next stop Atlantic City Auto sales about 3 miles west of Ocean city Proper
Here we parted ways with our Cadillac and stepped into the unknown a 1200 dollar Chevy conversion van I think I herd the salesman slip when I told him we were going to LA and his reply was “she MIGHT make it”
Ocean city is a narrow strip of land with only two main roads both one way each running north south so there are only 3 rows of buildings. The one facing the inlet, the one bounded by the two main roads and the one facing the sea. The buildings all looked as if they came from the sixties and seventies a little bit rundown. We found a park and headed up between the units to come onto a boardwalk that went for at least a mile in either direction fronting the boardwalk where all manner of tourist shops that kept repeating themselves about every 200 yards with T-shirts, candy, pizza, junk jewellery, a bar, piercing shop, games parlour and then basically start again. Lots of people finishing off there summer holiday, an amusement park ( $3 Zipper rides ), a beach that was about 100metres wide almost dead flat with the boardwalk on the same level. Wouldn’t take much for the tsunami to swamp it. After a walk and an ice-cream ( Trev Vanilla Bean and Cath Peanut Butter YUK ) it was back into the fan fire up the 7 cylinders and chug off to wards Delaware Not knowing where we were going to stay
We decided to brave it and turn off the GPS and just using the map a sign came up saying Milford so Cath looks it up in the lonely planet guide which States a lovely picturesque little town so we think lets go
We moseyed on next door to the diner it was straight out of the movies and looks like its been there for 50 years Cath had the Sheppard’s pie with green beans I had the 8oz Kobe fillet with mashed potatoes and carrots both were good hearty meals and with 2 coffees and 2 Pepsis set us back 32 bucks with tips my steak was almost as good as any pub eye fillet in Brisbane that you pay 28 dollars for.
We head back to the motel room to put all the electronic stuff on charge download our photos and write this log
Been a good day fairly easy first day on the road
Till the next time
