In transit to Moscow, I was able to spend one night in Helsinki to enjoy a tour of this Finnish city for a day.  I spent the night at the Scandic Hotel on the northwest side of the city.

I mention this first, because this was a time when the Russian art galleries let us take pictures (in 2000), and I fell in love with Russian art.   On my second visit to Russia six years later, picture taking was not allowed, and I was very disappointed, because there is a great art work at the Tretyakov gallery in Moscow where Ivan the Terrible just mortally wounded his son, and he has him on his lap.  The grief in his face reflects the tragedy of the moment.   As with many Russia works of art, the painting tells a story.

My vacation picture album seems to have survived quite well, but without any commentary.  I think the pictures will speak for themselves, so it shouldn't be a problem.

I have also posted my second trip to Russia in May of 2006 earlier on this blog.   The itinerary was almost identical, but with most visits to the same destination, we end up seeing different things and more variations of the places we visited before.  ++

NOTE: The recent subway bombings included the station at Gorky Park.
