Thursday, September 8, 1994

This was a tour offered by American Airlines called "FlyAway Vacations" to Eastern Europe.   The official start date for the group tour was September 10, 1994, but I arrived in Frankfurt two days early to explore on my own, and to learn about this fifth largest city in Germany.   I also learned that there are two Frankfurts in Germany; the one by the river (am Main) and the other, Frankfurt (Oder).

FRANKFURT am MAIN:

This was the home of the poet Goethe, and "was" the financial center of Germany when I visited.
I actually stayed in two hotels while in Frankfurt, because the first two days were on my own.  I splurged and stayed at the Intercontinental Hotel by the river not far from the central train station.

I walked the city the two full days I was there, and visited many of the museums that line the river.  Walked the Ziel, the main shopping street; visited Romer (means Roman), the "old" town; and the Opera House.

BERLIN:

Our hotel was in East Berlin, and it was a time of great renovations of buildings here.  When I visited Berlin many years later, it looked like a different city.   All the buildings were completely renovated, and all the museums were in full operation.

WARSAW:
We were treated to a Chopin piano concert in Warsaw.  We also visited the Jewish Ghetto in Warsaw.  The hotel where we stayed was adjacent to one of Warsaw's main street, and I was able to observe the people going to the subway in the morning hours.

KRAKOW:  The St Mary's Church rings its bell at 3PM every day to commemorate the event when the Genghis Khan's horde attacked Krakow.   The horn-blower on the church's steeple to warn about the attack was shot in the neck, and the sound of his trumpet slowly died down.

Our visit to the Wieliczka Salt Mine was very impressive.   I have felt since visiting that site is that it should be included in UNICEF's World Heritage Site.    The miners were also very good artists, and they created a chapel with carvings of many religious events - all carved in salt.  We also visited the home of Schindler (Schindler's List), and the fortress.

BUDAPEST:
I have visited this venerable city a few times, and always find it a fascinating place.

VIENNA:
We stayed at the "historic" Parkhotel Schohbrunn,  This is where Thomas Edison stayed when he turned on the lights at Schonbrunn Palace.
Vienna's ambiance never seem to change.   I bought the DVD "The Third Man" after I returned from my second trip to Vienna, and the scenes in the movie are the same as they look today.
We rode on the huge ferris wheel, and our Tour Director served us wine as we enjoyed the scenery.

MUNICH:
When we visited Munich's Marienpltatz, the prime minister was speaking to a huge crowd, and the atmosphere was electric.   We also had a large stein of beer at the famous beerhall near Marienplatz.   This is where I "learned" to hold a beer stein properly.

NUREMBERG:
The German sausage in the old town square is the best in Germany!   We also visited where they held the Nuremberg Trials, and on a later visit to Nuremberg visited where Hitler used to make his speeches, and the nearby stadium.
