OAHU is the heart of Hawaii although not the largest of the Hawaiian islands.  It is, however, the cultural, financial, the capital, and top tourist destination of all the islands.   It's home to 85% of the state's population, and its also where my cousins and nephew lives.

The attractions on Oahu are many including the many beaches, lowbrow and highbrow shops and restaurants that caters to all manners of tastes and price levels.   But one thing is for sure, the cost of living in Hawaii is high compared to many other states in the union.

Although Waikiki looks like most metropolitan big cities in any country or state, it has many places to relax to enjoy some quiet and serenity.

My sister, her husband, my wife and I, all stayed at my nephew's condo on the 40th floor of the Windsor, overlooking all of Waikiki.   My sister and her husband arrived earlier, and picked me up at the airport when I arrived on January 9th for two weeks.  My wife arrived four days later to leave on the same day as me on the 23rd.  I walked 79 miles during my two weeks in Paradise.  That's about 5.7 miles/day.   Yup, we love to walk.  It was between 78 and 82 degrees with some short rain periods.

So, without further adieu, here's a day by day activity log with pictures.   Enjoy.

JAN 9, Thu: I arrived after 1pm, because I had a layover in Maui, but my sister, her husband, and I walked to Ala Moana SC, Don Quiote *Japanese supermarket, and International Market.

JAN 10, Fri: We drove to Costco, Sam's Club, and Walmart today to shop for household goods and food.  We also walked to Ala Moana SC, because it's less than one mile away from my nephew's condo, and they have a very good food court with a good variety of food. However, we had lunch at Ruby Tuesday, one of the "better" restaurants on the third floor of the shopping mall.

JAN 11, Sat: I walked on the beach from the east side to the west side of Waikiki beach, then walked back on several streets packed with shops and restaurants.  I also visited the 442d Infantry Battalion Memorial Site.  We had dinner at Roy's restaurant.

JAN 15, Wed: As you have observed by now, my sister loves to go shopping!  We walked to Ala Moana SC and Walmart, then met my cousin at the food court.  We went upstairs to Macaroni Grill for lunch.  After lunch and returning to our condo, I took a short nap.  We walked to the beach, and watched a hula show.

JAN 17, Fri: Today was a very special day, because we visited the USS Missouri, the ship that was docked in Tokyo Bay on August 29, 1945, to prepare for the signing of the instrument of surrender by Japan and many high ranking military officials of the allied powers.  General Douglas MacArthur stepped before the microphones and opened the ceremony by stating, "It is my earnest hope - indeed the hope of all mankind - that from this solumn occasion a better world shall emerge out of the blood and carnage of the past, a world founded upon faith and understanding, a world dedicated to the dignity of man and the fulfillment of his most cherished wish for freedom, tolerance, and justice."

The deck of the ship was decorated with a 31-star American flag that Commodore Matthew Perry in 1853 sailed into Tokyo Bay to force the opening of Japan's ports to foreign trade.

Having visited the USS Arizona on our first trip to the islands many decades ago, there was no need to see it again.  All I wanted to do on this trip was to visit this historic ship, the USS Missouri.   People often wonder why they used this ship.  The reason is very simple; President Truman was from Missouri.  Our docent on the ship, John, was very good at explaining the history and providing us with a general tour of the ship.

Since it's taking too long to upload pictures on this long blog, the remainder of this blog will be continued in Part II.

The visit to the USS Missouri in continued in Part II

JAN 18, Sat:  We were invited by my sister's friends to their home for lunch in Miliani.  My serving included poi, mochi-tofu dumpling soup, macaroni salad, vegetables, sushi, rice, lau lau, and another vegetable.  I really loved the mochiko-tofu dumplings.
