Oct 30, Wed: BERNKASTEL is really two towns with its sister town Kues that sits on the opposite bank of the Mosel.  Bernkastel is considered one of the prettiest towns in the Mosel Valley.   We were treated to a visit to a winery with lecture and tasting.

The first bridge between Bernkastel and Kues was built in 1874, and the rail link in 1883.  There were great unrest amongst the winemakers along the Mosel and the financial office in Bernkastel and the customs office in Kues and they were stormed.

In 1938, there were great riots against the Jewish inhabitants, and the synagogue was destroyed.

The first democratic elections were held in 1946, and Hans Weber became its mayor.

We had a walking tour of Bernkastel, and a visit to a famous winery to sample some of their wines.

We set sail for Trier city after lunch.
