Magnetic Hill & Confederation Bridge

About the Irish in Canada.  From Wiki.
The peak period of entry of the Irish to Canada in terms of sheer numbers occurred in the 1830–50 period when 624,000 arrived, or 31,000 a year; smaller numbers arrived in Newfoundland. Besides Upper Canada. the Maritime colonies of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick, were popular destinations.

SEP 20 – Fri: Today was a travel day from Charlottetown to Moncton, New Brunswick, for a one night stay at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Main Street, not far from downtown.

CONFEDERATION BRIDGE was built in 1993 which took four years to build. It's seven stories high in the middle, and it is the longest free-standing bridge in the world at 9 miles. We drove over this bridge on our way to Moncton. We had a photo stop before crossing the bridge, and had a rest stop on the New Brunswick side.

The Province of New Brunswick is known for ship-building, and their flag design were taken from Armoral Bearings granted to New Brunswick in 1868 by Queen Victoria. The gold lion represents the Duchy of Brunswick. The flag was adopted on February 24, 1965.

We had an interesting stop at Magnetic Hill where vehicles roll up-hill with the engine turned off. Interesting.

We enjoyed lunch at a farm diner, and arrived at HOPEWELL ROCKS at 2:35pm with a pleasant temperature at 64 degrees F. Hopewell Rocks were formed by tidal erosion, and they stand between 40 to 70 feet tall. One must go down 99 steps to sea level, but the surface is not muddy and easy to navigate.

MONCTON  Although the area was first settled in 1733, it was officially founded in 1766 with the arrival of Pennsylvania Dutch immigrants from Philadelphia. I personally found Moncton to be a very friendly and service oriented city with many restaurants and bars on Main Street, not far from our hotel.

SEP 21 – Sat:                  We traveled to Halifax today with a stops at Peggy's Cove and Heritage Park dedicated to the SS Atlantic luxury steamship of the White Star Line that ran aground in 1873 that caused the loss of life of 562 people. It was then the worst Atlantic tragedy until the HMS Titanic (also a White Star Line ship) disaster in 1912 which lost over 1,500 lives.

Peggy's Cove Lighthouse is the most photographed lighthouse in the world – according to our Tour Director. I learned why. Most don't take only one or two pictures while there, but more like one dozen or more from many angles. The smooth rock surface is easy to negotiate when
dry, but one must watch for the crevices and different levels in the rock's surface. Fortunately for us, it was a nice sunny day.

Owner description: The SS Atlantic Heritage Park is dedicated to the memory of those lost in the SS Atlantic shipwreck of 1873. The SS Atlantic was the second ship of the White Star Line, the same company responsible for the equally ill-fated Titanic. Our site tells the tragic story of this disaster through interpretive panels and recovered artifacts. There is also a memorial for the victims, which is located in our beautiful seaside park.
