What I did
Rain in Havana

Flag of Cuba  ,
Monday, May 27, 2013

This blog covers a period of 13 days with 10 days in Havana, Santiago, and Baracoa, and 3 days in Mexico City.  I flew out of SFO on May 27, and arrived home on June 9.

DAY 1:
May 27: I took the red-eye from San Francisco to Mexico City, arriving at 5:37 in the morning.  I met my two friends at Terminal 2 after 8AM.  Since our flight to Havana was at 3:15PM, we had plenty of time to kill, so I had lunch at one of the many restaurants at the airport.

HAVANA
When we arrived in Havana, it was raining.  The average rainfall this time of year is four to seven inches per month.  However, we were lucky because it rained only a few days during our stay in Cuba.

DAY 2
May 28: While Alexander and I walked to Obispo Street, Steve stayed in his hotel room to work.

Obispo Street, the main pedestrian street in Havana, is just a couple of blocks from our hotel. We usually walk its length where it ends at Plaza de Armas where we sit at a patio bar and have a Bucanero (beer).

As our luck would have it, we saw a couple of our friends, so they joined us for drinks.

After a leisurely smoke and drinks, we headed towards Plaza San Francisco to make dinner reservations at Cafe del Oriente (we celebrated the last New Year's eve here) because it was Steve's birthday.  From there, we headed towards the old train station that has been converted into an art and craft market.

Alexander and I had lunch at Onda (another new favorite restaurant of ours) where we had oyster cocktail and fish.

DAY 3
May 29: When we are in Havana, we go to Nacional Hotel's patio to have a cigar and drinks - on soft, red, leather chairs and sofas.  We also know the hand-made cigar maker at the tobacco shop, so we go there to purchase some cigars.  When she recognized us, she broke open a cellophane wrapper to give us a cigar.

While sitting in the patio near the bar enjoying the scenery and activities, we saw a bride and groom having their photos taken.

After returning to our hotel, we went to Sloppy Joe's for a cocktail.  I had a drink called "sex on the beach."  It was quite good!

We had dinner at Onda.

DAY 4
May 30: In the late morning hours, we took the double-decker bus to the art and craft market. In the afternoon, I went to the Nacional de Bellas Artes, a museum of fine arts that exhibits Cuban art collections from the colonial up to contemporary times.  It was an enjoyable activity with five floors of good artworks.

DAY 5
May 31: After a late breakfast at the hotel, we wondered towards Partagas cigar factory about half mile from our hotel.  We always visit this factory to buy cigars, and to sit at the bar for a cigar and drink - and to watch the "world go by."

We took a taxi to Melia Havana Hotel for dinner at the Italian restaurant, La Scala, and to visit friends who work there.

DAY 6
June 1:
Not much to report for today, because I suffered from a stomach ailment that kept me in my room for most of the day.

On June 2, we flew to Santiago for an overnight.
