Oct 27, Sun: NIJMEGEN has a population of 160,000, and its Old Town and large student population are well known.  As the oldest city in the Netherlands, they celebrated her 2000th birthday in 2005.  The Valkhof Museum has a permanent display of their history including artifacts from the Roman era.  Although not many old buildings remain, some sites like the Valkhof hill downtown has a Carolingian chapel (8th-9th century AD), and a small remainder of their imperial castle that was destroyed in 1798.  There is also the 15th century Town Hall.

Henry VI, Holy Roman Emperor was born in Nimegen in 1165.

In more recent history, during WWII, the Germans made repeated attacks on the bridge using bombs attached to driftwood, and later resorted to 88mm barrages.  Nimegen was liberated from German captivity by the British Grenadier Guards as well as the American 82nd Airborn Division in September 1944.  This city was later used as and springboard for Operation Veritable, the invasion across the Rhine River by Allied Troops.

Nimegen is known as Havana on the Waal, because Nimegen is the only city in the Netherlands with a Left-wing government.

Although few Roman remains are visible today, the old city wall can be seen near the casino by the river.

We had some time to explore this historic city on our own, and some of us ended up in a coffee shop to have a hot cup of coffee.  It was chilly outside.
