MONTECASSINO:

Sep 10: Today was a travel day, but we were pleasantly surprised by a tour of Montecassino settled on a high peak at 1,705 feet altitude, the famous monastery (built 529) was founded by St Benedict was an important site of many battles during WWII. The Battle of Montecassino (also known as the Battle for Rome) from January to May of 1944 was the site of four costly battles where the allies lost 55,000 lives, and the Germans 20,000.

The monastery was destroyed by allied bombing on February 15, 1944, but it provided better protection for the Germans. The abbey was rebuilt in the late 1940's, and the basilica is richly decorated in stucco and mosaics that enshrines the relics of St Benedict and his sister, St Scholastica, which survived the bombings. The abbey museum displays medieval art and relics, and explains the history of monasticism.   I walked 10 miles.

Our bus driver,Pasquali, did an expert job of driving up the narrow, curvy road where it was too
narrow in many places for vehicles to pass, but the view as we gained altitude with breath-taking.
