FLORENCE:Sep 8: Some call it “legendary Florence,” but I prefer to call it “the home of David,” because it's where the greatest artists define the Renaissance. Most people who have studied the Italian art and artists have heard of Leonardo da Vinci, Dante, Donatello, Michelangelo, Boccaccio, and Fra Angelico.
It's also where one can see the Duomo's Brunelleschi dome, the impressive bronze doors of the baptistry's Gates of Paradise, the Piazza Signoria, and the Ponte Vecchio ("Old Bridge-1345”) across the Arno river. This was probably my third visit to this grand city of arts of the Renaissance, and I would welcome another chance to visit if the opportunity presented itself. I love walking its narrow streets to explore the architecture, the shops, restaurants, gelato shops, and bars. I feel comfortable here, and it takes me into another time and place.

In addition to our tour of Florence, we were treated to an extra bonus by our visit to the Florence American Cemetery and Memorial. Roy W Harmon, a medal of honor winner is interred here along with 4,397 who sacrificed their lives for our country. Another medal of honor recipient is honored here in memorial. We had a short bringing down the flag ceremony, the pledging of allegiance, and singing God Bless America. It was moving.
I walked 8 miles.
