Sep 7: This was an optional tour offered by the travel company (GCT) that I wanted to participate in, because it was to the city of Siena. The city is surrounded by olive groves and the vineyards of Chianti to the north. It's also considered one of the most beautiful cities of Tuscany that sits on three hills. Piazza del Campo stands at its heart with the Duomo and St Maria della Scala provides additional landmarks. The very popular Palio is the annual horseraces that takes place on July 2 and August 16 with only six horses where thousands of spectators fill the Piazza. It's also home to one of the oldest universities in Europe.
The countryside of the Chianti area between Florence and Siena is one of the most beautiful in Italy.
