JUN 27: TRINIDAD: This colonial town is the main attraction which was declared a UNICEF World Heritage Site. The narrow cobblestone streets is a little bit difficult to navigate for those of us used to level pavements, but the colonial homes, churches, historical buildings, and quiet squares provides for tranquility and charm. Once one becomes somewhat acquainted with this lovely town, you become one with the elaborate Plaza Mayor with sitting areas, statues, and palaces and pastel-colored houses that surrounding the park . On one corner is the Iglesia de la Santisima Cathedral that was completed in 1892.
Trinidad has two major picturesque towers; the 18th century Convento de San Francisco and the former Palacio Cantero which now houses the Museo Historico Municipal. I usually read
about the destination I'll be visiting, but this tour was not planned, so we missed an interesting museum, the Museo de la Lucha Contra Bandidos, which focuses on revolutionary Cuba and the struggle against bandits. Maybe, next time.
SANCTI SPIRITUS is a province of mountains, beautiful beaches. and sugar plantations of which Trinidad is one of the most prominant.
