APR 8; Corfu. What becomes quickly obvious is the Venetian influence of this Ionian Island of Greece. The first site upon reaching town by bus is the St George's Church and the medieval Venetian fortress, and the Venetian influenced architecture of the town.
The history of Corfu begins in 734 BC when the Corinthians established a colony on the narrow strip of sea that separates Corfu from the mainland of Greece. During the Roman and Byzantine periods, Corfu lost its importance, but regained it when the Venetians occupied the Ionian Islands during the 13th century. We were provided a walking tour in Old Town and one of the
most important church of the island, the church of St Spridon, patron Saint of Corfu. The names Spiros or Spiridoula used by both men and women are popular. Many Brits have settled here.

On our free time, I spent most of the time around Old Town, north of Nikoforou Theotki street which has many shops, and it rained about 50% of the time while in Corfu. Corfu has three
palaces, the Sts Michael and George built by the British, the Mon Repos Palace where Prince Philip of England was born, and Achillion Palace that belonged to the Empress Elizabeth of Austria (Sisi or Sissy).  We were supposed to have a tour there, but it was closed.

We stayed overnight in Corfu, and on the following day, APR 9, we were coached to the west side of the island to Paleokastritsa, a beautiful bay with a marina, rather than to Sissy's Palace . On the way there, some of the passengers complained about the cold in the bus, and as soon as the driver turned off the a/c, the windows got all fogged up, and we couldn't see anything outside the bus.
