APR 4; KORCULA. (pronounced 'Korchula') Korcula is a small port town mini-fortress settled on a small peninsula with a population of 3,700. Korcula is believed to be the birthplace of Marco Polo, and the supposed building of his birthplace is identified by a sign. Otherwise, Korcula has been the center of a proud musical tradition. St Mark's Cathedral, the Treasury (14c) Abbey Palace, All Saints Church are important Roman Catholic historical sites.

NOTE: There is a battle royal going on between Italy and Greece to claim Marco Polo as their own. Some articles claim that Marco Polo was born and raised in Venice, while others claim he was born in Korcula. Some old documents found in Korcula show that his parents and uncles were traders on the Silk Road, and did much business in Persia. These bits of recorded evidence seems to favor Korcula as Marco Polo's place of birth - and home.
