APR 2; SPLIT. We were treated to a walking tour of Diocletian's Palace this morning. It is one of Croatia's top sites, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The walled city is quite large, and Emperor Diocletian began construction in 295AD. It took ten years to build; part imperial villa and part fortified camp, the palace structure has diversity of forms with an octagonal domed mausoleum (Cathedral), rectangular Temple of Jupiter, and circular temples to Cybele and Venus. Except for some of the modern shops within its walls, the walled palace still retains some of its age and history. It's an experience to walk within its confines that was one of the most outstanding contribution to the Roman Empire. 5,250 steps
