OCT 4: Some in our group got up early in the morning for the optional balloon ride over the tufa (for $180). Later in the morning, our group coached to Avanos, a village known for the carpet-making. We spent most of the morning there to see how they spin the silk from the cacoons, how they dye the threads, and how they are used to make the carpets from wool-wool, wool-cotton, and silk. The number of knots per square inch can range from hundreds to over a thousand. Silk carpets can have over 1900 knots per square inch. I purchased a silk carpet in
Egypt on my first visit to that country in 2002, and paid $400 for one at 26” x 15.5”. On my second visit to Egypt some years later, I asked how much they were selling a carpet of equal size, and was quoted $1,000, but I didn't buy it as an investment, but to enjoy, because silk carpets are beautiful. Our's is hanging on the wall. Silk carpets are the most expensive, because of the labor that goes into making one, but there are different qualities of silk carpets as there are in almost every works of art.

After lunch, we visited the towering Uchisar Kale (fortress) that can be seen for miles. We also visited the tufa formations of Pashabag, conical-shaped pinnacles capped with basalt and are used as storage units today.
