SEP 25
: Everyone in our tour group opted for the full-day tour of the ancient Greek city Pergamum built high on a hilltop. It was the Kingdom of Pergamon during the Hellenistic period, 281-133BC, and mentioned in Revelation in the bible. The Lower Acropolis was the center of medicine where Galen, the famous doctor, who worked in the sanitorium, wrote several hundred medical books.

The important structures at Pergamon are the Upper Acropolis, the Lower Acropolis, and at the foot are the Sanctuary of Ascelepius and Serapis Temple. The Temple of Trajan was reconstructed, but there are other ruins that are worth visiting such as the temples of the Egyptian gods Isis and Serapis, the theater on the side of the hill, the agora, Roman baths, and some others too numerous to name.

PERGAMUM has much in its history that most are familiar with about the personalities of its day.  Alexander the Great provided the funds to build Pergamum, and Mark Anthony gave all the books of the library to Cleopatra as a wedding gift.   Temples and altars were given Greek mythological names such as Athena, Zeus, and Dionysos.

ASKLEPION was a medical complex that was built to honor Aesculapius, the god of Health and Medicine, has existed since the 4th century BC, and contains a small theater, rooms where the patients were treated, and the Temple of Asklepion, the library where Galen treated patients in the 2nd century BC.   It was more like a spa than a medical center, and the world's first psychiatric hospital.  Many of the treatments used the local water that later was found to contain radioactive properties are again used in modern applications.   They also used massage, herbal remedies, mud baths, music, concerts, and relaxation.  Patients included Hadrian and Marcus Aurelius.

The site includes the Sacred Way that is colonnaded, the acropolis, Via Tecta near the entrance that leads to the courtyard and Monument Gate.    In the first courtyard is the modern symbol of medicine, the serpent, the emperor's room, and the circular domed Temple of Asklepion.  There is an underground tunnel called the Temple of Telesphorus used as treatment rooms and sleeping quarters.  The northern colonnade with 17 columns leads from the library to the theater.
