Gallipoli peninsula is a beautiful area in which the War of Independence was fought; it is now sacred grounds for the people of Turkey, Australia and New Zealand.

SEP 23: Today was a travel day from Istanbul to Canakkale with a tour of Gallipoli, the scene of the famous and tragic battles of 1915 and 1916. The Gallipoli Campaign took place at the peninsula of Gallipoli in the Ottoman Empire when the joint British and French tried to capture the Ottoman capital of Constantinople, but their attempt failed with heavy casualties on both sides. It was a defining moment for the Turkish people in defence of their motherland. The Ottoman Empire was deteriorating, and established the Turkish War of Independence, the foundation of the Republic of Turkey by Mustafa Kemal (Ataturk), a commander at Gallipoli. It was also the first major battle by the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) which gave birth to Anzac Day in Australia and New Zealand. I'm just wondering now whether what I observed in Sydney in August of veterans and high officials gathered for some sort of memorial service to be any way connected to this event. Many of the memorial sites in Gallipoli were those of Turks, and Lone Pine for Australians, and New Zealanders.
