ADELAIDE: August 7 and 8.
We had a 5:30AM wake-up call for our 9:10AM flight to Adelaide. However, our flight was delayed one hour, so our city tour was cut short. After our arrival in Adelaide town center, a lady and her daughter (from Washington DC) and I went to the Japanese sushi restaurant for lunch. What surprised me most was that the workers in the restaurant, and most of the customers were Japanese!    On my first visit to Australia over a decade ago, I rarely saw any Japanese.  I can't find that here in California where most Japanese restaurants are owned by Koreans, and the workers are Mexicans.  I had several sushi plates from the revolving sushi bar and udon (noodles) for a very satisfying lunch.

After a quick bus tour of the city, we were taken to the Cleland Wildlife Park to see wombats, koalas, several species of kangaroos, echidnas, wallobees, dingos, reptiles, and an aviary. We were also able to touch and take a picture with a koala. *They are not bears but a marsupial.

For dinner that evening, we were hosted in a private home for two groups of eight.  Our host, Andrew (a warehouse manager) and hostess, Emma (in the travel industry for many years) were gracious with their two delightful daughters. Four in our group brought a bottle of wine,
and the host also opened a bottle. It was a very pleasant evening – to say the least.

NOTE: Lance Armstrong has visited Adelaide several times to encourage bike-riding, and attracted increasing numbers from 4,000 during the first event to 6,000 people on his last visit. He's planning another visit, and they expect 10,000 people to participate.
Walked only 1.45 miles.

August 8: On the following day, four of us went on an optional Barossa Valley Wine Country tour ($107.50-a bargain) instead of the primary optional day tour to Kangaroo Island ($213).
Our driver-guide/owner of "Taste the Barossa" wine tours was Dallas, a genial, informative, patient guy who took us to four wineries in Barossa wine country from 9:30AM to 5PM. Our first visit to the Barossa Dam's Whispering Wall was quite interesting, because Dallas went across the dam to the other side, about 2500 meters away from us, but we could hear him talking in a moderate tone. The acoustics was amazing!  The popular wines made here are the Shiraz, one of my favorites that leaves a good after-taste in my mouth.   We even had a taste of sparkling Shiraz at
one of the winery. The wineries we visited for tasting were Chateau Yaldara where most visitors photograph their beautiful tasting room building and grounds. Their gift shop had opal jewelries from a mine and factory, so I purchased an opal earring with small diamonds for my wife's birthday on September 4. We also enjoyed a short walk in the town of Tanunda; then to the “famous” Peter Lehmann winery where they served us some $100/bottle Shiraz and lunch.. Our last winery was at Murray Street Vineyards with a visit to the Seppeltsfield Winery vineyards with their over 100 year old vines.

With Dallas' commentary along the way and the too numerous information and history on the vineyards and wines, the wine tastings, and the included lunch, all of us were contented with this very special day in Adelaide.

Pino, Julian, and I went to a Thai restaurant that evening for dinner not far from our hotel where we ordered three different dishes and ate family-style.It just doesn't get any better than a day like this one.
