Manta is the port city for Ecuador.  Ecuador is Spanish for equator, and the smallest Hispanic nation in South America.

When we were ready to pass through the imaginary line called the equator, the ship hosted a party for passengers who passed the equator by ship as was done by the Vikings.   It's considered a rights of passage from Pollywog to Shellback.   The ship's staff wears costumes, and initiate some of the passengers with some fun trickery and games.

When we landed at Manta, and got off the ship, there was a free bus service to their local shopping mall.   After walking through the mall, we went outside to look for a taxi to take us to Quito, the capital, but nobody spoke any English, so we ended up taking a taxi to Monticristi, the home of the Panama hat.  We spent a few hours there to look at the local church, and the courtyard in front where they setup booths to sell crafts and hats.   We walked around downtown where we saw the Panama hat being made by hand, and displayed for sale, took some pictures, and got back on the taxi to explore some more.  The taxi driver took us to the General Delgado's memorial where we stayed to look at their statues and displays, then proceeded further out of town.   When we realized the taxi driver was taking us too far, we asked him to take us back to the ship.
