My wife and I hopped in our car and drove to Monterey, then hit highway 101 to Los Angeles and San Diego. The pictures will have to tell the "story," because I've forgotten most of what happened during the interim from one place to the next.

On our way to Catalina Island
From the web:
"Catalina Island sits roughly 22 miles off the coast of California, southwest of the city of Los Angeles. Although borne of somewhat infamous beginnings, today Catalina Island is a bustling tourist destination and home to nearly 4000 residents.
For the next 300 years the island was home to many visitors. Russian otter smugglers, Spanish smugglers, Chinese pirates and Franciscan monks all used Santa Catalina as a base of operation, but due to the lack of fresh water the island was very hard to inhabit for a long period of time. At the turn of the 19th century, the island was almost uninhabited, even though on the mainland the city of Los Angeles was undergoing an enormous growth period. The growth of LA as a city was a major contributing factor to Catalina Island developing into a gorgeous
vacation destination."
