JAN 16: Belize City, Belize, is one of the destinations that's been on my “to visit” list, but it was a big disappointment. It was also a Sunday, and almost everything was closed. A small group from our ship just started to walk out from the terminal area, and we were approached by several taxi drivers trying to get our business (on a very slow day). They were quoting some outrageous prices, but we just ignored them, and none of us really showed any interest, but after a few blocks of walking by the light tower, a guy in our group negotiated with a taxi driver and agreed on $5 p/p for a city tour, so we took him up on it. We got a pretty good Cook's tour
of Belize City, but it being Belize, it really doesn't have much of anything to see. We did see the swing bridge, and St John's Anglican Church (oldest in South America). Of more interest for me was the fact that our driver, Jose, is Lebanese who has also lived in Texas, so we learned
about his family which was more interesting than the sites. He loves Belize because of the simple lifestyle it offers to him and his family, and that any kind of discrimination is not tolerated.

From Wiki: "It had previously been a small Maya city called Holzuz. Two movies were filmed here: The Dogs of War (1980), starring Christopher Walken and The Mosquito Coast (1986), starring Harrison Ford."
After the tour and we were dropped off by the terminal, several of us sat at the bar in the terminal and enjoyed a cool, local, beer before returning to the ship.
