Before I proceed with the Greek mainland tour, I wanted to post some pictures of our boat during our cruise on the Aegean Sea.  Her staff was friendly, and the food above average.   I sat at the Captaiin's table for the first time in all my years of cruising; this one was special, because this Captain spent many hours with his guests during the day, and made himself available to everybody.   I also celebrated my 75th birthday on the ship.

July 8, 2010, Thursday:
Today was a very long travel day.   We disembarked the ship in the morning in Piraeus, boarded our (NICE, NEW, HUGE) bus, and began our coach journey to Kalambaka.about 370 miles from Piraeus.  With stops along the way, it took us about 7 hours, but our energy returned when we found ourselves at the hotel with an excellent view of Meteora's mountain range.  I guess the best way to describe it is "magnificent!"

I took 171 pictures while in Kalambaka/Meteora; some are amazing shots, not because I'm a good photographer, but the scenery is prone for good photographs.

We visited several monasteries in Meteora, and one required a slight climb of stairs and hill, and crossing over a footbridge built between to hills.   We visited the Holy Monastery of St Stephen, and the Holy Monastery of Varlaam.

I will identify only some of my pictures; the sequence when there are nine pictures in a group, they will be counted from left to right, and top to bottom, as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.

Here's my teaser shot:

#1: The floor plan of this hotel was similar to what we had in Jerusalem at the Mt Zion Hotel; the lower levels had higher floor numbers.  Our room's balcony had an open view of the Meteora mountain range where I took several pictures.   #3: Varlaam  #4: View from our hotel  #5: Holy Monastery of Rousanou/St Barbara  #6: Varlaam bridge  #7 Monastery of Holy Trinity  #8:  Holy Monastery of Varlaam.

DELPHI; July 9-10, 2010, Friday-Saturday:
Our hotel in Delphi was the Apollania Hotel within a short distance from downtown Delphi and the archeaological site.  Since we had one whole day in Delphi, I must have walked the same streets in Delphi several times on self-exploration.   I had dinner by myself at a restaurant overlooking the valley down into Itea where we had lunch the day before.   I had four huge grilled prawns with some veggies with beer.  It was delicious!

There isn't much on Athens, because we had only half-a-day to tour this city, and to catch our flight early in the morning for home.  Since I've been to the Parthenon several times before, I opted out, and instead, walked around the streets below the Parthenon.   I did walk to Hadrian's Arch and Xeus' Temple, and took picures of the Parthenon from a cafe I've eaten at before with a good view of the Parthenon.   Our hotel St George in the Lycavittos District was located next to the Lycavittos hill, so I climbed to the top - without my camera - and enjoyed a beer in the cafe before returning for our farewell dinner in Piraeus.    Since I was the only one leaving at 4AM, the company hired a taxi for me to take to the airport.
