This was really a trip by my wife and I that was unplanned; we just took off in our car, and visited family in the Sacramento Valley and headed towards the wine country and the coast along Mendocino County.

ELK GROVE:

My sister lives here, and my nephew had his dental office here.

OLD SACRAMENTO:

As a child growing up in Sacramento, this was the city I grew up in for the first 17 years of my life.  The city preserved this section of Sacramento, and made it into a tourist attraction with shops, restaurants, and a railroad museum.

JELLY BELLY CANDY FACTORY (Fairfield, CA):

We have visited this candy factory a few times - a couple times by ourselves, and several times taking out of town guests to participate in the factory tour.   I usually end up buying several large bags of jelly belly candy called flops.

SONOMA:

Most people who come to visit the wine country visit both NAPA and SONOMA.  On this trip, we spent most of our time in Sonoma.   This was the first time we visited the Mission San Francisco de Solano, last of California's 21 missions.

ELK COVE INN (B&B):

This was the first time my wife and I stayed over in a B&B.   Elk Cove Inn is an 1883 Victorian oceanfront mansion they have expanded with five new luxury oceanfront suites.   We stayed here for three nights to enjoy Bodega Bay, Point Arena (lighthouse), and Elk.

MENDOCINO:
We stayed at the Mendocino Hotel, built in 1878, it's centrally located on Main Street, and within walking distance to all of the shops, restaurants, and museums.  Some years later, my niece had her wedding here.

FORT BRAGG:
Has a botanical garden and the skunk train.

Grey
Whale Inn

615 N. Main St Fort Bragg, CA 95437 Overall Rating:  3.3 / 5  Fort Braggs premier bed and breakfast inn, this inn is in
convenient proximity to the ocean, beaches, state parks, rivers, and
forests of Mendocino County and it offers 13 cozy spacious guest
rooms.   This B&B was converted from a hospital, and our "room" was the OR, so it was huge.

During the following month, I flew down to Southern California to attend my niece's graduation from Cal State University in San Bernardino.  I'll add this short visit to Southern California at the end of this blog, because I stayed at a hotel in Palm Springs while visiting down there, and saw some interesting stuff there that might interest some of you to visit in the Palm Springs area.
