Caen, Normandy, Northern France
GMT +1:00 hour

A Bust & (another) Baguette
Today, so far, has been a bit of a bust. It started as planned even if we were just an hour or so behind schedule leaving the hotel. The plan was to get to the train station, leave our bags there for the afternoon and go to the Caen Memorial WWII museum, before returning to the station to get the afternoon train to Paris. The only problem was that when we got to the station there was no luggage storage facilities. I never even considered that there wouldn't be luggage storage facilities, something almost EVERY European train station offers (except Caen). So with the guts of 25kg on my back, 20kg on Megs and 2 day packs swinging from our arms we weren't going anywhere, at least not comfortably. Already behind schedule we immediately gave up on the notion of getting to the museum and set about trying to get an earlier train to Paris. It was worth a shot, we thought, but to quote the politeness challenged conductor...

"Non, non!"
"Uniquement train numero 3354"

Okay, even I could understand what he was saying - that we can ONLY take train 3354, the one we had the reservation for. It was due to depart at 2:24pm. It was about 11am when we posed the question. That gave us limited options (very limited) so we found ourselves spending our last few hours in Caen train station, babysitting our bags and watching 5 (maybe 6) trains pass through the station on-route to Paris. It wasn't a total waste of time however; we managed to update our diaries (don't think any less of me... I only keep one on the road, a habit Meg was keen to share) and I worked a bit on our Caen Travelpod entry. We left the station about an hour before departure to get a lunch we've become quite accustomed to... a combo of a baguette sandwich, sweet pastry and drink (Megs favourite part is obviously the sweet pastry). Offered in any Boulangerie worth its salt (or flour), they are cheap & filling.

Approaching Paris
Mercifully the 2:24pm departure time rolled around and we hopped on the train. As I type Meg is sitting beside me reading her book.... actually nope, she's asleep.... and we're about 30 minutes from our arrival time in Paris. We're both so pumped about the next 5 days, 4 nights we're due to spend in Paris, somewhere neither of us has been but have both wanted to see for a long time. We'll obviously be reporting whenever we get the chance. One of our first missions in Paris will be to get an internet connection so we can upload the entries we've created for this trip so far so you guys can see what we've been up to. But first things first; we've got to negotiate the Paris subway and find our hotel. Shouldn't be a problem... famous last words.

Day 4 Observations... so far (August 17th 2007)

B & B
Don't all hotels include breakfast in the price of the room? We thought so until we went to pay the bill. Just an observation, not a rant; the hotel was great.

B, B & B
Sitting in a French train station Babysitting Bags for 3 and a half hours is Boring.
