***************************************** Update - March 2008 ****************************************
In March 2008 I made it back to Agra as part of my ill-fated Honeymoon. Check out my ingeniously labelled 'Marble-ousī entry here. I've been told it makes for better reading than this crap below, which I tend to agree with!
***************************************** Update - March 2008 ****************************************

And so to Agra, 3 hours from Delhi by train. The reason for coming here was, of course, to see the Taj Mahal. Built by some dude morning the death of his wife it is dubbed as the most over-the-top monument to love ever built. It certainly is a sight. The level of detail in the carving on the walls is amazing and has to be seen to be believed. Agra itself is a bit of a dump and it is suffering because of the governments decision to charge outrageous entrance fees into the tourist attractions, the Taj included which cost about €15 for us to see. As a result nobody hangs around Agra, deciding to visit the Taj on a day trip from Delhi, and the local restaurants and businesses are really finding it hard to make ends meet. When we ate out we were the only ones in the restaurant. We did hang around however and spent a good day been shown the sights, other than the Taj, by a local in his tuk-tuk before he dropped us off at the train station for our train to Varanasi.
