Nightlife in Hyderabad leaves a lot to be desired in terms of variety.  Yes we have clubs, yes we go dancing/drinking, yes there are several places to choose from to go to each week.  That being said...it's still boring to do the same thing week-in, week-out.  So...I was pretty pumped when my friend Sonny decided to get off his lazy ass (just teasin' Sonny) and finally do some real work by planning a different sort of event for Hyderabad expats.  He and his father own a travel agency in India so they have connections with the local government to be able to bypass all the red tape when it comes to holding events.  The event they decided to host was a big party for all expats one Saturday night...but to have that party on a boat cruisin' around the major lake in Hyderabad - Hussain Sagar.  Click here to see an overview map of Hyderabad and where the lake is.  For reference, I live in Jubilee Hills and work in HITEC city...all on the West side of town.  Everything South of the lake is old town.

Anyway...the booze cruise sounded like a great idea, but Sonny was trying to plan this, print invites, send those out and get a decent sized crowd together all within a period of 7 days.  I told him it sounded like a disaster waiting to happen, but the guy pulled it off.  For a charge of 1200 rupees each ($30USD) everyone got fours hours of cruising, 3 full time DJ's who played great music, unlimited alcohol and really good food.  Everyone had a great time and the party was definitely one of the best nights out since I've been here.  I told Sonny earlier that I would be the official photographer, so I resisted temptation to over-indulge and ended up getting some great shots of people who were definitely not on their best behavior. ;-)  I also got some great pics of the lake and the buddah statue which you'll see in this entry as well.

Unfortunately as many of you have read in the papers and seen online, there were a couple bombings in Hyderabad recently...one of which was set off in Lumbini Park which is on the lake and exactly where our boat docked at.  It really hit home with all of us on the boat when we heard about the bombings as we were at Lumbini Park getting on the boat exact to the minute one week before the bombing too place.  It sucks that someone would do that to innocent people, but the people of Hyderabad resisted the temptation to riot and revolt and really did take it all in stride and come together to bash the bombers, rather than each other.

Anyway...don't want to end this entry on a bad note so I'll tell you that the boat party was such a huge success that Sonny is planning on doing it many more times...next time I won't be the official photographer. :)
