TURKEY - KUSADASI (EPHESUS)

VIEWED THE RUINS OF THE ANCIENT AND NOW UNINHABITED GREEK CITY IN TURKEY OF EPHESUS.
THE CITY OF EPHESUS'S HAY DAY WAS FROM 800 BC to 500 BC
HOWEVER, IT HAD ANOTHER 700 YEARS - FROM 500 BC to 200 BC AS A VERY IMPORTANT CITY IN THE ANCIENT WORLD AS PART OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE. IT WAS A VERY IMPORTANT PROVINCIAL CAPITAL.
IT HAD A POPULATION OF OVER 250,0000.  IT IS COMPLETELY DESERTED NOW, EXCEPT FOR MILLIONS OF TOURISTS LOOKING AT IT. ONLY ABOUT 15% OF THE CITY HAS BEEN UNBURIED EXCAVATED AND WE ONLY SAW ABOUT 10% OF THAT PART.  THEY ESTIMATE THAT IT WILL TAKE ANOTHER 100 YEARS TO COMPLETE THE EXCAVATION OF THE ENTIRE SITE.  THIS SITE IS BIGGER THEN DELOS AND ABOUT 10 TIMES BIGGER THEN POMPEII.
MODERN DAY POLLUTION DISCOLOURS MARBLE  -  THERE IS NO POLLUTION HERE, SO THE MARBLE HAS MORE OF IT ORIGINAL, NATURAL COLOUR.

A LOT OF THE ROMAN STATUES HERE HAVE CROSSES CARVED ON THEIR FOREHEADS BY THE CHRISTIANS AS THEIR WAY OF CHRISTIANIZING THE STATUES  -  OOOOOH, THOSE CHRISTIANS WERE AT IT AGAIN  -  THEY NEVER SEEM TO STOP.

EPHESUS WAS ONE OF THE FIRST CHRISTIAN CITIES IN THE WORLD
   -  PAUL LIVED HERE AND WAS FROM EPHESUS
   -  JESUS'S DISCIPLE JOHN LIVED, PREACHED AND DIED HERE  -  WE SAW HIS TOMB, WHICH IS IN THE CENTRE OF THE ST. JOHN BASILICA.
   -  THE VIRGIN MARY SPENT THE LAST YEARS OF HER LIFE HERE,  BEING TAKEN CARE OF BY JOHN.
    -  CHRISTIANS BUT THE MARK OF THE FISH ON THE FRONT OF THEIR HOUSES TO SHOW THAT IT WAS A CHRISTIAN HOUSE  -  THOSE MARKS ARE STILL THERE TODAY.

OTHER THINGS THAT WE SAW IN EPHESUS:
   -  HOUSE THAT THE VIRGIN MARY LIVED IN FOR THE LAST 10 or 15 YEARS OF HER LIFE.  JESUS'S DISCIPLE, JOHN,  LOOKED AFTER JESUS'S MOTHER AFTER HIS DEATH AT JESUS'S REQUEST.
   - THE HOUSE THAT MARY LIVED IN LOOK RELATIVELY LUXURIOUS FOR THE TIMES  -  2,000 sq. ft.  - I WASN'T ALL THAT IMPRESSED WITH THE HOUSE  -  BUT THEN, I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT MARY WAS A VIRGIN EITHER.

A BASILICA BUILT TO HONOUR ST. JOHN (JESUS'S DISCIPLE)

ONCE UPON A TIME, ie 800 B.C. - 2,800 YEARS AGO, THE MAJORITY OF GREEKS AND THE CENTRE OF THE GREEK WORLD WAS IN WHAT IS NOW WESTERN TURKEY - WHICH WAS CALLED ANATOLIA BACK THEN.

MANY OF THESE GREEK CITIES CONTINUED TO EXIST UP UNTIL 1922 - WHEN, AS A RESULT OF THE GREEK/TURKEY WAR, MILLIONS OF GREEKS WERE EXPELLED FROM TURKEY, AND THESE GREEK CITIES CEASED TO EXIST AS GREEK CITIES. BY THE WAY, GREECE EXPELLED 100,000's OF TURKS FROM GREECE AT THE SAME TIME.

TURKEY ALSO CHANGED THE GREEK NAMES OF THEIR CITIES TO TURKISH NAMES. ie. CONSTANTINOPLE WAS CHANGED TO ISTANBUL,
EPHESUS WAS CHANGED TO KADASUS  -  EPHESUS HAD BEEN THE NAME OF THAT CITY FOR MORE THAN 2,600 YEARS AND GREEKS HAD LIVED THERE FOR MORE THAN 2,600 YEARS.

THE TEMPLE OF EPHESUS WAS ONE OF THE 7 WONDERS OF THE ANCIENT WORLD. THERE IS NO TRACE OF THAT TEMPLE TODAY IN EPHESUS, BUT THERE ARE MARVELOUS RUINS OF ANCIENT GREEK BUILDINGS AND OTHER THINGS, MUCH BETTER THAN ATHENS.
