MALAQUE/MEXICO

MALAQUE IS A SMALL, SLEEPY, DUSTY (DIRT STREETS) MEXICAN TOWN ON THE PACIFIC COAST OF MEXICO OF ABOUT 5,000 PEOPLE  - IT IS BETWEEN PORTO VALLARTA AND MANZANILLO.

IT IS A BEAUTIFUL PLACE - BEACH IS ABOUT 5 MILES LONG AND SHAPED LIKE A SEMI CIRCLE AND IT IS CHEAP  - WE HAVE A PLACE ON THE BEACH.
  -  IT IS $120 A WEEK AND OF COURSE JOHN AND I SPLIT IT 50/50, SO IT IS $60 A WEEK PER PERSON. WE GET A PRIVATE WASHROOM, A T.V. THAT WE DO NOT WATCH, THERE IS A SWIMMING POOL, AND AS I HAVE SAID BEFORE, WE ARE RIGHT ON THE BEACH. THERE IS A FREE TABLE WHERE PEOPLE WHO ARE LEAVING, LEAVE STUFF THAT THEY DO NOT WANT OR NEED. MANY OF THE PEOPLE THAT COME HERE FLY SO THEY ARE VERY LIMITED IN WHAT THEY CAN TAKE BACK. ALSO MANY MAKE OR COOK THEIR OWN MEALS SO A LOT OF FOOD GETS LEFT. THE HOTEL MANAGEMENT HANGS A BIG BUNCH OF BANANAS FROM THE CEILING OVER THE FREE TABLE FOR THEIR HOTEL GUESTS. UNFORTUNATELY FOR ME, I REALLY DO HATE BANANAS, ALTHOUGH I HAVE NOTICED THAT JOHN SEEMS TO BE EATING QUITE A FEW OF THEM. ALSO A LOT OF PEOPLE STAY HERE FOR SEVERAL MONTHS AT A TIME AND ACCUMULATE A LOT OF STUFF THAT THEY DO NOT WANT TO TAKE WITH THEM. THERE IS ALSO A STORAGE ROOM BECAUSE A LOT OF PEOPLE KEEP COMING BACK EVERY YEAR AND RATHER THEN TAKING STUFF WITH THEM AND BRINGING IT BACK THE NEXT YEAR THEY JUST LEAVE IT HERE IN STORAGE EVERY YEAR

THERE ARE A LOT OF PONY TAILS, LONG HAIR AND BEARDS HERE - THERE IS DEFINITELY A BEACHCOMBER, HIPPIE, BOHEMIAN MENTALITY AND ELEMENT HERE THAT I RELATE TO. AND THE WHOLE TOWN HAS A VERY CASUAL, LAID BACK RELAXING ATMOSPHERE THAT I FIND VERY ENJOYABLE AND PLEASANT. AND OF COURSE THE SUN, SAND, SURF AND HOT WEATHER ALSO HELP.

I THINK THAT I AM FALLING IN LOVE WITH THIS PLACE.

GOING FROM MEXICO CITY OF 28,000,000 TO MELAQUE, A CITY OF 5,000 IS CERTAINLY GOING FROM AND TO THE EXTREMES.

BEING IN MELAQUE, I NOW REALIZE THAT THE MIDDLE CLASS, MIDDLE AGED, CONSERVATIVE ATMOSPHERE OF LAKE CHAPALA IS NOT MY CUP OF TEA.

IN MELAQUE, THERE ALWAYS SEEMS TO BE SOMETHING ON THE GO.
THERE IS A 10 DAY ST.PATRICK DAYS CELEBRATION ENDING ON MARCH 17/ST. PATRICKīS DAY (FOR SOME REASON THE MEXICANS ARE VERY BIG ON ST. PATRICKīS DAY AND THE IRISH)
THEN THERE IS A 10 DAY RODEO STARTING ON MARCH 17.
THEN THERE IS THE EASTER CELEBRATION, WHICH IS BIGGER THEN CHRISTMAS HERE IN MEXICO.

THERE SEEMS TO BE LOTS OF HIPPIE AND BEACHCOMBER TYPE HANGOUTS HERE.

THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH AND COCA COLA BOTH SEEM TO HAVE A VERY STRONG, TIGHT GRIP ON MEXICO.. MEXICANS SURE DO LIKE THEIR COCA COLA AND SO DO I.

THAT IS ALL FOR NOW
