Mis Estimados Compadres,

Amigos, Amigas, Compañeros y Compañeras:Now. Here. This . Ahora. Aquí. Esta.I like San Miguel - but San Miguel is not for everybody.

It is for people that can and will adjust and adapt to a new
and different environment that involves a different culture,
a different people and different ways of doing things
and the different ways that things are done....  ..

It is not for people that cannot or will not adjust or adapt to a new
and different environment that involves a different culture,
a different people and different ways of doing things
and the different ways that things are done....

San Miguel is for people that enjoy new experiences and who are open minded and have enquiring minds and enjoy doing things....
San Miguel is not for people that do not enjoy new experiences
and who are not open minded and do not have enquiring minds
and do not enjoy doing things....

While living in San Miguel, I have seen people come to stay in San Miguel for a few months, who expect everything to be exactly the same in San Miguel
as it was where they came from - with lower prices and better weather.
They do not want to adjust to San Miguel, they want San Miguel to adjust to them.
They expect everything to be the same in San Miguel as it was where they came from including that everyone should speak English (including all of the Mexicans, who do not speak English) and everyone should do things the same way that they do things from where they came from and that there should be the same stores, restaurants, services and products and goods available in San Miguel as there are in the place that they came from.... Mexicans are different, Mexicans do things differently, it is a different culture and things are different in Mexico. Unless you are staying at an American All Inclusive Resort that caters to American/Canadian Tourists....There is no American All Inclusive Resorts that cater to American/Canadian tourists in San Miguel. San Miguel is not a tourist resort
type of place - it is a bed and breakfast and small hotels type of place....

San Miguel is high in the mountains (elevation - 7,000 ft.) of central Mexico,
far from the ocean and sea side tourist resorts that most Canadians
are familiar with.... San Miguel is far from the ocean and any water,
it is in the middle of a desert - because of its elevation (7,000 ft.) it has a very temperate and even cool and chilly sometimes climate. Temperatures vary between 5 degrees Celsius to 35 degrees Celsius during the day, but because of the dry air, it feels more like 25 to 30 degrees Celsius most of the time...
And because it is a desert, it does not rain very much, and therefore
is sunny most of the time..
Ottawa has a cold snowy winter with short days of daylight
and long days of darkness......
I do not like the winters in Ottawa anymore...
I do not like the cold, the snow and the darkness..
I like the warm, hot sunny weather of San Miguel better...
I like to be outside doing things
and out and about in nice sunny warm and hot weather,
which I can do in San Miguel and which I cannot do in Ottawa
during the winter....
In Ottawa, in winter, I do not like going outside and doing things..
In Ottawa, I hibernate in the winter time and I do not care for the darkness.
In San Miguel, during the winter, I am outside most of the time doing things
in the nice sunny, warm, hot weather...

Now that I am here in Ottawa in June, it seems to have rained, or been threatening to rain or very overcast, almost everyday that I have been
back here in Ottawa... And I do not even feel like going out when it is raining
or threatening to rain or very overcast... I haven't been able to go bicycling,
camping or sitting outside in the outdoor restaurant patios (I am retired and have lots of time to sit around now)...In San Miguel, when it does rain, it usually rains for about 30 minutes, then it is finished and over with and done.. In Ottawa,it seems to drizzle or be threatening to rain for days at a time..  ..

Some comparisons between San Miguel and Ottawa..
San Miguel is a city of 50,000 people,
Ottawa is a city of almost 1 million people....
San Miguel is small town friendly...
A city of 50,000 does not have the same facilities and services
that a city of 1 million has...
Getting around a city of 50,000 is a lot simpler, easier, more convenient,
faster and quicker and cheaper than getting around a city of 1 million.
In San Miguel - which has an excellent bus service
- bus fare is 5 peso's (40 cents) and taxi fare is 30 peso's ($2.40)..
- taxi's in San Miguel do not have meters - it is a flat fare of 30 peso's...
In Ottawa - which also has an excellent bus service
- bus fare is $3.00 and up
and it can take at least 1/2 hour to 1 hour to get anywhere.
- in San Miguel it takes 10 or 15 minutes to get somewhere by bus.
Taxi fares in Ottawa can be anywhere from $10 to $40
compared to $2.40 in San Miguel...
In San Miguel I can walk to downtown in 10 to 15 minutes
and I can walk to a commercial restaurant and other facilities area/street
in 5 to 10 minutes....
In a different direction from where I live, a 5 minute walk away,
there is a Mexican market that is several square blocks in size..
In Ottawa, I really do not enjoy sitting on the bus for 40 to 60 minutes to get anywhere..
Now that I am back here in Ottawa, I am starting to realize that things are more expensive in Ottawa than in San Miguel and things are cheaper in San Miguel than they are in Ottawa.. I think that I notice it more, or I am more aware of it,
when things are more expensive than when they are cheaper...

Some life style differences in San Miguel compared to Ottawa - maid service is included in the rental of my condo in San Miguel - laundry service is 30 peso's ($2.40) and most people get their laundry done by a laundry service and the laundry services are everywhere, all over the city, a shoe shine is
10 peso's (80 cents)..

The area of Ottawa that I live in has many old people living in the immediate vicinity - a retirement home, a highrise apartment building just for old people,
a number of old highrise condo's from the 1970`s that have a lot of old people in them that aged along with the old highrise condo's. The reason that I am mentioning this, is because there are a lot of old people in the area that are going around in those electric carts, and in walkers and with multiple canes..  There is a lot of old people (English speaking) in San Miguel. But in general, they are very fit and able to get around on their own... San Miguel is not a place for people who need electric carts or walkers or multiple canes to get around. They would not fit on the very narrow sidewalks or be able to maneuver on the very narrow, very steep, very rocky and rough streets.. If there are old English speaking people in San Miguel who cannot get around, you do not see them, because they are not out on the streets... The buses in San Miguel cannot and do not accommodate walkers, or strollers (the women carry their kids) and the taxi`s cannot and do not accommodate walkers. San Miguel is not a place for old people that cannot get around on their own...

The English speaking people in San Miguel tend to be adventurers, travellers,
and people that are use to doing things and like doing things, creative and imaginative people - and in general, more interesting people as a group,
than the people in Ottawa.
Because of their general age (older) and the type of people that they are,
I feel that I fit in better in San Miguel than I do in Ottawa.. The statistics indicate that the USA is the most obese nation in the world, and that Mexico comes in second...... In the area of Ottawa that I live in,when I get on the bus, I am surrounded by people that are so fat that they have a hard time getting around... I never saw that in San Miguel on the buses or anywhere else in San Miguel.....In San Miguel, the English speaking people seem to be trim, slender, fit and good looking - like me.In San Miguel, many of the Mexicans look like they are heavy and overweight, but not fat or so fat that they have a hard time getting around..Which makes me wonder how they define and arrive at these percentages of the population figures that are obese....I do not see how Mexicans in San Miguel that were too fat to get around, could continue to survive... and maybe they don`t, maybe that is why you do not see any of them around...... Or maybe San Miguel is not typical of Mexico, because of its altitude (7,000 ft.) and being on the side of a steep mountain....I am not saying that Mexicans are healthy - they have a high sugar diet and drink and smoke a lot... .

Anyway - I am beginning to think that I prefer San Miguel to Ottawa...San Miguel is not perfect, it is not heaven or a paradise on earth, but I like it.....

Bert Webb on

Stumbled on your old blog by accident. I hadn't received any news from you for a long time. I just missed you in PV as I was there for Christmas and New Years and then in February. Ironically I stayed in the Rosita in February. My wife passed away in Dec 2011 so I am on my own now. Drop me an email if you get a minute.
Bert
