Viva La Mexico

I do not know where I am going - but I am on my way...

Mexico is a unique country and it has an unique culture.
No other Latin American Country or Spanish Speaking country is like it..
That is why I like Mexico - I am not interest in going to Cuba, or Costa Rica, etc.
Maybe Peru to visit - but that is because of its remarkable and now extinct Inca civilization,
and its ruins..- not because it is a place that I would be interested in living....

Mexican culture is complex, sophisticated and deep...
Mexicans greet each other even if they do not know each other...
Buenos Dias - Good Morning
Buenas Tardes - Good Afternoon
Buenas Noches - Good Evening

It is a sign of respect...
It is more than a greeting.
It is saying that I am no better than you
and you are no better than me...

In Mexico - to not respect someone - the Mexicans refer to it as robbing them of their dignity..
To not acknowledge the presence and existence of another human being is to disrespect them....

Social upheavals produce this type of mentality sometimes..

The French Revolution (1789 AD) did away with titles, (temporarily
- everyone was referred to as "Citizen" and it did away with the distinct dress of the aristocracy,
introducing the modern dress code of today - killing aristocrats, who were recognized by the way that they dressed, was a powerful incentive to dress like everyone else - the common man...

The Communist Revolution in Russia (1917 AD) - eliminated titles and everyone was referred to as Comrade...

Mexico has undergone numerous social upheavals - including the dist ruction of several sophisticated and complex native civilizations that existed when the Spanish arrived in force
in 1519/21 AD.   -  the Aztec, Mayan, Zapotec's and Teotihuacan civilizations...

Mexican/Spanish Language oddities:

No Spanish word for "compliment"..
So when the Mexicans thank someone for a complement, they say
"Gracias por la flora"  - thank you for the flower...

They do not have a word for like - so if they like you, they say
"me gusta" - I am delighted with you....
or
"me cae bien" - I go well with you.....

Although most of my gentle readers will not be or are not interested in reading books on Mexico,
here is a list of recommended books on Mexico for those who are interested....

HISTORY

Conquest  - by Hugh Toms
Fire and Blood   - by T.R. Fehrenbach

PSYCHOLOGY

The Labyrinth of Solitude   - by Octavio Paz
  - won a Nobel Prize for Literature - a very deep book - not easy reading...

CULTURE

"Why Mexicans Act Like They Do"
"There Is A Word For It"
- by L. Demente

MEXICO TODAY

"Manana Forever"  - by Jorge Casteneda

An interesting thing - they have a very good public bus system in San Miguel.
I have often wondered about the very causal way that they control the cash receipts
that they get for the fares on the buses..... an open tray with the money in it.
And the bus drivers often seem to have one of their kids or a friend
collecting the money for the bus fares .....And they seem to let their friends
get on the bus and ride for free...
The bus system is owned by the private sector - not the city or a government.
And the individual bus drivers own their buses - obviously they are required
to run a certain route at certain times.
But in many ways the bus drivers are like taxi cab drivers
and they act like taxi cab drivers .

An interesting system....
