GOING THROUGH THE JONES FALLS LOCKS.....

I am the third person in a canoe - the only 3 person canoe in this canoe expedition...
I am in the middle position in the canoe, which means that I cannot sit,
I have to kneel on my knees and am very limited in how much I can move around.
Trying to move around usually involves putting all or most of my weight on one or the other knee which has a tendency to destabilize the canoe...
This puts a lot of strain on my knees and legs as I am not sitting on my ass,
I am in effect standing on my knees... And my centre of gravity is higher when my weight is on my knees and not my ass - which again makes things a little more tricky....
Because of the strain on my knees and legs, I try to get out of the canoe when ever I can
- like when we are waiting to go through the locks or going through the locks.
There was over an hour wait to get to go through the Jones Falls locks and another hour to actually go through the locks...This gave me more than two hours to stretch my legs
and give my legs some relief... It was not wasted time - I used the time to take pictures of the other canoeists waiting to go through the locks and actually going through the locks...

The other canoeists must have been very comfortable sitting in their canoes - not kneeling like I was  - because I was the only one that got out of our canoe - all of the other stayed, sitting in their canoes for the more than 2 hours waiting time and actually going through the locks at Jones Falls...

Besides taking pictures of the other canoeists (that is why I am not in any of the pictures), I went over to a hotel and snack bar and got an ice cream cone and some diet cokes.
Most locks have a hotel, motel and restaurant and rental cottages. The Rideau Waterway is a very popular fishing area for fishermen, and there are usually a number of resorts at each set of locks that cater to fishermen. Apparently the bass fishing in the Rideau Lakes area is very good, excellent....As we are canoe along, we see many people fishing from their boats. Some are sitting on swizzle chairs, like we have at the office, on the decks of their boats.- others are standing. I suspect that some of these fishermen that are standing on their boats fall over and into the water and drown every year... not a lot, but some..... Most or many of the fishermen or tourists seem to be Americans - and the fishing resorts and tourist resorts seem to cater to the Americans and target the Americans as potential customers. eg. hotel rates and fishing resort rates are quoted in USA $$$$ and there is constant and repeated references to their friends and guests South of the Border...the Rideau Lakes area seems to be much more popular with Americans and out of province Canadians than it is with Canadians living in Easter Ontario.... .

Having a third person in a canoe does cause some problems -  because of the extra weight, the
canoe is lower in the water and the top of the canoe railing is closer to the water. There can be large waves on some of the lakes and from the wakes of the big boats going by - which come closer to the top railing of the canoe....

We camp on the camping grounds that are at each of the Locks. Our logistical support team carries our camping gear and personal belongings and meets us at the camping site each nite/afternoon,about 4:00pm. We setup our tents and get organized while the logistical support team prepares supper...The Logistical Support Team also makes breakfast the next morning and provides us with a box type lunch for us to have during the day...We usually leave about 8:00am each morning.. During the day we take breaks (thank God!!!!!) - one about 1 & 1/2 hours after we leave in the morning - a lunch break - and we dock up to camp for the nite about 4:00pm at predetermined sites (the locks and connected or related camping grounds) ...

It is really great having a Logistical Support Team carrying all of our stuff for us and making all of our meals. If we had to carry all of our stuff and make all of our meals it would really be a lot of work and a real ordeal... I do not think that we could carry all of our food - we would have to pick it up along the way - either that or eat very spartanly and sparingly.....

So far we have not done any portages - we have gone through the locks - it is a lot easier...

Some people picture me sitting in my canoe with my lap top computer and/or tablet, connected to the internet by a wireless internet server sending out emails all day... I did not bring my lap top computer and/or a tablet or smart phone. Where we camp each nite, at the locks and camping grounds, there is hotels, resorts, restaurants, etc. and I can usually get access to a computer with an internet connection to connect with the outside world... In addition to ice cream cones, diet cokes and chocolate bars - we are not really roughing it....

Bon Voyage
