New Year's eve started with lunch with a new found best friend forever.

Went to the Bull Fight after lunch about 3:00pm..

There was supposed to be flamingo dancing, but we didn't see any..

Found out later it was in the bar downstairs in the Bull Fighting Arena

The Bull Fight started late at 5:00pm.......

........................................................................................................

There was 4 bull fights and each last about 1/2 hour so it was all over in 2 hours about 7:00pm...
At the end of those two hours 4 dead bulls had been dragged through the sand and out of the arena by two horses....after having been tormented for 1/2 hour than killed. Four bull ``bit the dust``
I wonder if that is where that expression came from. They watered down the sand before the bull fights. However, San Miguel is in a desert, and by the end of the bull fighting the sand was starting to dry out and there was clouds of dust sometimes. The sand here is very fine, like a powder, very dusty...

There is a lot more to Bull Fights than meets the eye, or people in nonbull fighting countries, like Canada, are aware of. It also fits in with the Spanish and Mexican culture and way of life...
I doubt very much if the people in Canada could ever fully appreciate bull fighting because of the differences in our culture from the Mexican culture - example, the crowd cheers when the bull is killed, whereas many Canadians would feel sorry for the poor bull when it is killed after being tormented....
I wished that we had, had a Mexican with us to explain and point out the finer details of the bull fight and even the terminology...

A little bit about the bullfight and bull fighting..

........................................................................................

.........................................................................................

First: The Bull Fight is not really a fight. It is an art form...
It is a ritual celebrating the manhood of males and their manliness.
It is a La Fiesta Brava.....
It is about bravery and conquering fear

..................................................................................................

....................................................................................................

An enraged bull is let into the bull ring.
The bull has a spear that has been stuck into its side dangling from it and that is why the bull is enraged. The bull is further enraged during the bull fight by a man sticking a spear into the bull a number of times. The bull is even further enraged by one of the Matador's assistants sticking two short spears into the bull twice - these are very colourful barbed spears that do not come out and dangle from the back of the bull for the rest of the bull fight. The purpose of these maneuvers is to enrage the bull as much as possible...

....................................................................................................................

......................................................................................................................

...........................................................................................................................

There is the Matador..
The Matador has 4 or 5 assistants that are dressed like Matador and have capes like the Matador, but they do not have a sword - only the Matador has a sword..... The Matador does a lot of strutting around...

..............................................................................................................................................

..............................................................................................................................................

...............................................................................................................................................

..................................................................................................................................................

The Matador and his assistants are dressed in:
- sissy pink tight stockings
- very fancy shoes
- skin tight pants
- Elvis Presley type jackets with sequins, bright doodad's, etc
- the jackets are in very strong, bright colours - gold, silver, green, whatever
- funny looking black triangle hats

...................................................................................................

.....................................................................................................

The bull fight is a show and a ritual...

.............................................................................................................

.................................................................................................................

...................................................................................................................

In addition to the Matador taking the bull on, on a one on one basis, to show the bull that he, the Matador, is more of a man than the bull (see pictures), the following takes place during the bull fight...

.......................................................................................................................

............................................................................................................................

...............................................................................................................................

....................................................................................................................................

There is a man on a very heavily armoured horse (the horse is blind folded) with a long spear that comes into the bull ring at some stage of the bull fights and fights the bull by sticking his spear into the bull - the bull attacks the man on the horse and plows into the horse with his horns while the man on the horse is sticking his spear into the bull(see pictures)...

...............................................................................................................

.......................................................................................................................

..............................................................................................................................

One of the Matador's assistants , who is dressed like the Matador, comes out with two short spears, one in each hand, and sticks the two spears into the bull. This is a very dangerous maneuver sticking very short spears into an enraged bull. The Matador's other assistants,
who are also dressed like the Matador, help the bull spear sticker by distracting the bull
with their red capes. It is still very dangerous and I do not think that most people
would want to try to stick two spears into an enraged bull...He does this twice.
You will see the colourful spears dangling from the bull in some pictures...

........................................................................................................................

..............................................................................................................................

.................................................................................................................................

......................................................................................................................................

The Matador faces the bull, one on one, with his red cape and sword, and shows the bull that he, the Matador, is more of a man than the bull is(see pictures). This is the purpose of the bull fight, a ritual to show that man is braver than and more manly than a bull...

...............................................................................................................

..................................................................................................................

.......................................................................................................................

.........................................................................................................................

.

The Matador attracts the bull and entices the bull to attack him, using the red cape...
When the bull attacks the Matador and the red cape, the Matador steps aside as the bulls hurtles into the red cape with his horns. The Matador does this numerous times and to get the bull to attack him repeatedly in a very short period of time is considered very good form. The Matador does these maneuvers with great style and grace and body language that show and indicates that the bull does not scare him - that he, the Matador, is not afraid of the bull and does not fear him, the bull, because he the Matador is a man, a real man...

................................................................................................................

.................................................................................................................................

To show the bull that he, the Matador, is not afraid of the bull and does not fear him, the bull, the Matador does a number of different things during the bull fight to show the bull this.
One, the Matador turns his back on the bull and walks away with his a scornful look on his face...,
He does this several times...
Do you think that you would want to turn your back on an enraged bull and walk away,
and do you think you could do it with a scornful look on your face to show that you have no fear of that enraged bull.

The Matador out stares the bull from a very close distance, with nothing between him and the bull.
To do this he must have very fast reflexes and be able to react very quickly and he may be able to sense when the bull is tensing up to charge him. The bull never reacted when the Matador did this,
they just stared at each other. The Matador did this several times...

Another maneuvre to show that the Matador is not afraid of the bull, is for him to get down on his knees in front of the bull - this puts the Matador in a very vulnerable position because he is not in a position to maneuvre quickly when he is down on his knees...

Several times the Matador laid his sword on the top of the bull`s head and then turned around and walked away to show that he could have killed the bull, but choose not to, he spared the bull its life, this time..

......................................................................................................................

...............................................................................................................................

...................................................................................................................................

......................................................................................................................................

........................................................................................................................................

The bull fight ends with the Matador sticking his sword into the bull.
It usually takes the bull a minute or two to die, it walks around in a daze, walking slower and slower, and than it lays down. The crowd cheers wildly. There is no sympathy for the bull. Often the bull is not completely dead, and an assistant comes up with a knife and stabs the bull to death...
Two horses come into the bull ring and drag the dead- bull through the sand out of the bull ring...

......................................................................................................................................

....................................................................................................................................................

....................................................................................................................................................

..................................................................................................................................................

The Matador, with some of his assistant Matadors, walks around the edge of the bull ring completely, blowing kisses to the crowd (or maybe just the women in the crowd, he is a man).
The crowd throws their hats into the bull ring as he passes them to show their respect. and admiration for the Matador. He or his assistants throw the hats back into the crowd. I didn`t throw my hat into the bull ring. Not as a sign of disrespect, but I was afraid that I might not get my hat back. People also throw flowers, other pieces of clothing, women`s bra`s, etc......

This happened after each of the 4 bull fights....

All four bull fights followed the same pattern and moves and were very similar.
I guess that it is the skill with which the moves are performed during each bull fight
that is what the show is all about................

Killing the bull is a very, very small part of the bull fighting show and one wonders
if they couldn't have a bull fighting show without killing the bull at the end of the show...
But the spectators/audience really, really likes the part where the bull gets killed.
There is wild cheering and applause when the bull gets killed. So for the spectators and audience this does seem to be an important part of the show to them. And it does make it a life and death struggle if the bull dies at the end. The bull is fighting for its life, doesn't know it,
and doesn't have a chance of winning, by coming out of the fight alive,,,

It takes great courage and enormous skill to face down an animal with the killer instincts of a fighting bull. In the final analysis, the drama playing out in the arena is not about the matador triumphing over the bull, but rather over himself and his fear...

It was a great way to spend New Year`s Eve.......
