The door would barely shut. The jeep was piled with sleeping bags and boys. Alec in the front, Sam's carseat in the middle of the back, Brett and Jake squshed in on either side. Seventy-five miles of that, be careful, bye, now, and they drive away.

Matt and Andrew, start stacking things beside the car, they drag around, are they tired or just don't want to leave? We must be out by 12. Are all the windows closed? At last, the key is placed back in its little box.

We stop at Index, drive around the tiny mountain town, it's cute, a train goes by, its Amtrak, heading towards Seattle now. And so are we.

I promised Zeke's, a milkshake like you've never had before, thick with blackberries, fresh from mountain vines, oh no! The line is stretch so far, the boys decide, we'll pass, we don't want to wait.

And then they fall asleep. I drive the fifty miles in quiet, looking at the hills.

At home and Rick and Kayla run to greet. Rick wants to hear what else we did, he's grinning as he thinks of it, one for the memory books, he says, such a great idea. Thanks GMom for the cabin, Matt gives me a hug, thanks for the weekend.

Andrew curls up on the ground, too tired to say goodbye.
