Matt has had his head in the book since we came upstairs to get coffee and juice. What Makes Flamingos Pink? Indeed.

He begins to laugh, well, what, I say, my emotions seriously divided. This ferry ticket cost $54, I'm thinking, so by criminy, at least GLANCE out the window at the water, the islands, the sailboats, it's so beautiful! On the other hand, who isn't pleased that a teen is reading a book, something semi-educational at that.

He begins to read aloud, about spiders, I remind him how he read me spider stories from that very book in 2001, in Montana. The most venomous spider is the Granddaddy Longlegs, you told me then. Only it can't bite because its mouth is too small.

Well, this is something else, he says. Spiders on marijuana! They did research and those spiders were spinning webs with big gaps. Spiders on caffeine just spun a few strands and then stopped. Spiders on sleeping pills never even started a web.

"Imagine," he is now laughing hard, "little spiders sitting around smoking a joint, holding it in their little spider legs." "Or sitting around with their Starbucks" I add, and we laugh some more. "Or popping sleeping pills!"

It was a moment.
