Go with me? One nice thing about our mountain landscape is that it gives us lots of creeks. And these user-friendly places beckon from every corner of our community.

Lookout Creek winds through the Chattanooga Nature Center on the west side of Lookout Mountain. South Chickamauga Creek is part of the Audubon Acres scene and reason for the Brainerd Levee. North Chickamauga Creek falls off Walden Ridge and flows gently through the Hixson community.

Huck Finn may have used a raft, but I'd say there's no better way to explore our peaceful waterways than with canoe and paddle. Own your own, if you can. And this almost-summer holiday weekend is the logical time to buy. Rock/Creek Downunder has a large selection that's sure to get you psyched.

Or maybe you'd prefer starting with a rental and some how-to. Rentals are available Saturdays and Sundays at the North Chick Greenway. It's a mere $15 for a canoe that easily accommodates two or three people; they also rent kayaks-for-one. This offering is from the Chattanooga Parks Department, which also provides guided trips on South Chick. Call OutVenture for the schedule; trips are $8 per person. Lookout Creek canoe explorations can be scheduled through the Nature Center with the naturalist.

Canoeing seems to get more popular by the year. And it is, after all, an Olympic sport. We won't be forgetting the Ocoee thrill in our lifetime! But you don't have to train forever to enjoy it. Learn the basics, including safe boating, and your hobby will take you from your Scouting years through your family years to the end of your golden days. See you there.
