The Gorge is our very own wonderland of a river canyon. Carved through the Cumberland Mountains, it serves as habitat for more than 1,000 varieties of plants, trees, and flowers. Its 25,000 green acres attract bald eagles, peregrine falcons, and lovers of the out-of-doors.
The Trust is a non-profit organization that's committed to looking after our nationally significant Gorge. They stage this Festival each year to raise funds for land protection and education. It's a moveable festival, held on private farms we wouldn't get to visit otherwise. And this year it's at Gordon Lee Farms in Chickamauga.
We can tour the grounds of this working agricultural farm and fish or kayak in its private lake. Kids can ride ponies, pet animals, or make things -- their own garden stepping stones or an old-fashioned fishing pole.
Osprey-Orvis is there to help with fly-fishing lessons and Rock/Creek Outfitters with kayaking. Master Gardener Jim Elliott will give us gardening tips and Jim Hatchett leads us on tours of a tree nursery.
Complimentary beverages, festival fare, and a silent auction round out our visit. Bid on a plane ride throught the Gorge, season tickets to Finley Stadium, a Lookouts package, or a gorgeous bird bath. See you there.
