Go with me? Everyone whose childhood included skating raise your hand. Now, who loves it today? If it's part of memory or the newest sport you've tried, you know this slidin' glidin' ride is the most fun you can have on two feet.

My first skates were adjustable metal contraptions that I screwed onto my shoes with a key. Bruised knees were honorable marks, as my friends and I clunked and bumped over tree roots and sidewalk cracks. When a rink opened in my hometown, we'd stay all day, circling the wooden floor in a mad-hatter spin, hypnotized with our speed.

And that was nothing. The old-timey attachables have given way to molded plastic made to fit the foot; but the real speed comes with the blades, man. Roller blades. Inline speed. Yet even with today's streamlining, the music and the thrill still go round and round, as before.

We've got four great rinks in the Chattanooga area, and they are good spots for birthday parties, church groups, teenage dating, or family rockin' and rollin'.

At Skatin' Jakes, the moose on wheels will join your party for a little fun and friendship; and maybe even give you some skating tips. Jake has a Kiddie Skate on Saturday mornings, for ages 11 and under. Sunday afternoons parents with kids get to skate for a dollar!

Are you aggressive enough for roller hockey? Call the Hotline and get on a team. Boys and girls and men and women are welcome. Right now there are two teams for kids under twelve, two for 13 and over, and six adult teams. More will be added as needed.

The All-Star Chattanooga Chargers just toured to Nashville and Knoxville and came home proud. If you don't want to play, you may enjoy watching on Mondays.

Bring your school buddies the first Thursday of the month and skate with the officers of the DARE program. All proceeds benefit DARE activities, and the school with the most kids present wins a trophy.

Every third Saturday Jake invites you to skate all night. Nobody thinks of sleeping as the entertainment changes from races to arm wrestling, with trophies for nearly everything. A police officer is on duty during the all-nighters and there is no alcohol, no smoking, and no gum allowed. Jake and I will see you there.
